Delete your account

You can delete your Mahaul account at any time, in the app or by email. This page explains how, and exactly what happens to your data.

In the app

  1. Open the You tab and tap the settings icon.
  2. Under Your data, tap Delete account.
  3. Type DELETE to confirm, then tap Delete account.

You're signed out straight away. Your account is closed now and permanently erased 30 days later. Changed your mind? Sign in with the same phone number (or the Google, Apple or Facebook account you linked) before then and tap Restore my account.

Want a copy of your data first? Tap Download your data in the same place, before you delete. It's ready within 90 days at most, usually much sooner, and it's deleted along with your account.

Without the app

If you can't use the app, email [email protected] with the subject “Delete my account”. Send it from the email address on your account, or include the phone number you signed up with, so we can find it.

We'll check that the request really comes from you before we delete anything, and we'll reply to confirm. We reply within 90 days at the latest, and usually much sooner.

What happens to your data

Straight away

  • Your account is closed. You're signed out on every device.
  • Nobody can see your profile, photos, posts, comments or plans any more. You no longer show up in the People deck, on the map, in search or in lists of who's going. In chats, you show as “Deleted user”.
  • We send you a notice with the date your account will be erased.

For the next 30 days

  • Nothing is erased yet. If you sign in again with the same phone number, or a Google, Apple or Facebook account you linked, you can choose Restore my account, and everything comes back as it was, or Continue deleting.
  • About 3 days before the 30 days are up, we remind you.

After 30 days: erased

An automatic job runs every hour. The first run after the 30 days erases your account. It deletes:

  • your phone number, email address, password and date of birth
  • your name (replaced with “Deleted user”), username, bio, city, music taste and settings
  • your photos and videos, from our storage too: profile photos, post photos and videos, photos you sent in chats and gathering covers
  • your posts, with their comments and Vibes, and your comments, Vibes and tags on other people's posts
  • the events you marked going or interested, your Out this week nights and the gatherings you joined
  • your friends, friend requests, matches, waves, blocks and People deck history, in both directions
  • your approximate location, your contact matches, your devices and sign-in sessions, and any Google, Apple or Facebook sign-in you linked (we also ask Apple to end Mahaul's access)
  • your notifications, and other people's notifications about you (such as your friend request or your comment)
  • a copy of your data we prepared for you, if you asked for one

If you host a gathering that hasn't happened yet, it's cancelled and the people in it are told. If you run an organizer page, it's suspended, its upcoming events are taken off Mahaul and people going to them are told.

What stays

  • Messages you sent stay in the other people's chats, because the conversation is theirs too. The text is replaced with “Message deleted”, any photo is removed, and the sender shows as “Deleted user”.
  • Records the law or safety requires us to keep, with your name, phone number and IP address removed. Each is then deleted:
    • audit logs and consent records: 1 year after your account is erased
    • safety reports and moderation cases about you, or that you made: 1 year after the case is closed
    • cases opened because of a court or government order: 3 years after the case is closed. While such a case is still open, your account stays closed but isn't erased until it's closed.
    • purchase records, if you ever bought anything: 8 years, as tax law requires
  • A record that you asked us to delete your account and that we did, with nothing in it that identifies you.
